In the past, writers needed to have at least one rating star in order to get upfront payments for the article they submitted to Helium. Today: they have changed this rule and now writers no longer need to gain a rating star in order to qualify for upfront payments.
A rating star is gain via simply rating other articles.
This is not the only change made: there are some other changes too.
