FL has announced that their site will be down for Four Hours on Friday, 5th of March, 2010, at 8:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time.
You can see this update in the main account area and in the news section.
This is what we call “Scheduled Maintenance” downtime.
I am not sure if what I think is correct or not, but I believe that freelance sites should not be offline for even few minutes. There are lots of people who do free online jobs at these sites. These people have to deliver the promised work to buyers in time and a downtime at a freelance site can create problems in the delivery of the work.
Service providers and buyers need to communicate with each other to discuss things: people need to pay others and there are many other important things that are done at these sites.
I personally think that FL should create a mechanism where buyers and service providers should still be able to communicate with each other and do other important things at FL, while FL staff can do maintenance work on the back end. Blocking users from certain options is ok but if the whole site is down for several hours, then that is not ok.
Anyway, you now know about this downtime so be prepared.
