Friday, 12th June 2009 Marked a historic day in Iran’s political history when huge masses of general public went out to cast their vote in electing the new president for next term. Ahmadinejad faced a tough competitor: Mousavi who emerged with a more liberal and pro-west agenda. Iran’s population constitute 70% of under 30 and this is the chunk where a pro-western approach emerged and which came out in masses to support Mousavi.
The election turnout was massive and it took quite a while to announce the winner and for many western countries the result was not only surprising but also disappointing as well as Ahmadinejad was declared the winner and was elected the president of Islamic Republic of Iran for a second term. He secured 65% of votes announced by the officials here on Saturday eve.
Mousavi’s supporters were left shocked and deprived with the results and came out in streets to mark their protest. Mousavi does not seem to be happy with the results and has launched his protest claiming that the results do not reflect the true position.
Early riots broke in the streets of Tehran just minutes after the announcement election results. In order to keep things under control, the security personnel were advised to remain red alert. After the official protest from Mousavi, the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatullah Khamenei ordered an enquiry over Mousavi’s claims.
It seems that the election process in Iran will not finish here and Ahmadinejad will face a tough time in the coming days in order to secure his place in the presidential palace.
It is now in the hand of the elections supervisory council who has already launched an investigation into Mousavi’s claims.
Update: Ayatullah Khamenei announced on Friday, 19th of June, 2009, that the election results are valid and there was no vote-rigging. He announced that the election was fair and said that the protests should stop.
