Difference between Avoirdupois Ounce and Troy Ounce

Ounce is used as a unit for measuring Mass. There are few different types of this unit: these different types have different values. The most commonly used units are: Avoirdupois Ounce and Troy Ounce.

Avoirdupois Ounce:

This type of ounce was once used by many countries as the unit of mass. Its value [one ounce] is approximately: 28.35 Grams. Nowadays, this unit is only used in USA.

Troy Ounce:

This type of ounce is used for measurement of gold, silver etc. One troy ounce is equal to 31.1 Grams.

Why I am writing about the types of Ounces?

Well I update gold rates of different countries in the News Section. I write the price of gold for one ounce, one tola and for 10 grams. Some user posted a comment and said that my conversions of gold between these 3 units are not correct. He mentioned that my first conversion from ounce to tola is slightly wrong.

I checked the rates on the post where this comment was posted and I found the rates ok. I then realized that the user wrote this comment because he saw the Avoirdupois ounce rate somewhere on the internet.

Please note that for gold measurement, we have to use Troy ounce. This unit’s value differs from other types of ounces.
