Multiple/Dual Monitors will work with 1 DVI and 1 HDMI port?

I have tried to find this answer on the internet but haven’t found a definite one.

As far as I know, there are different situations where HDMI port might be used for Multiple monitor setup:

Things are confusing : )

What do multiple monitors means?

For me, it means that you attach two monitors with one PC and both these monitors show Different screens/signals.

On the other hand some people just want to attach a TV or second Bigger monitor so that they can view the Same picture/screen as displayed in the first one. They still call this setup a Dual or multiple monitor system. There is a difference between these two types: showing the same thing in the second monitor and treating the second monitor separately are two different things.

Following are different types of video cards and their possible characteristics:

1 video card with One DVI and One VGA and One HDMI port

As far as I know, you can attach two monitors with such cards. You can get a HDMI to DVI convertor but this will not enable you to attach a third monitor.

1 video card with One DVI and One HDMI port

In some cards, you can attach two monitors using a HDMI to DVI convertor. Both ports will carry different signals. So multiple monitor setup is possible:

In some cards, the same signal is available at the HDMI port. You can attach a TV to HDMI port but it will show the same display as of the first monitor.

In some cases, you may only be able to use either one of these ports and not both of them at the same time.

All depends on the type of card you have.

1 video card with Two DVI and One Display-port and One HDMI port

I personally have such a card and can attach 3 monitors with it. To get different displays, we need to use the DVI and Display ports and not the HDMI port.

Bottom line: before you buy a card, make sure that it supports 2 or more monitors. Don’t just look at the number of ports on the back side. You need to look at the specifications or search on the internet. you want to attach a second monitor in your system? But you are not sure whether you attach it in the HDMI port or not?
